6 decades of oh so fabulous weddings!

Ripon Does Vintage Wedding Fair

To get some inspiration for your big day, here’s a whistle stop tour of wedding trends throughout the decades!

This year we’re venturing into new frontiers by organising Vintage Wedding Fairs with the wonderful ladies at The Wedding Affair. Our first Vintage Wedding event takes place on 26th January 2013 at Ripon Cathedral.

Princess Anne of Orleans and Prince Amedeo of Italy

In the 1920’s, wedding dresses started to emulate current fashions, flapper style dresses were worn with cloche-style wedding veils.  Princess Anne of Orleans (right) wore a stunning, on-trend dress when she married Prince Amedeo of Italy in 1927. This tendency to follow current fashions continued until the late 1960s, when full length dresses became popular again!

In the 1930’s brides wore turbans, inspired by hollywood eastern headdresses. These headdresses were transformed into stunning bridal headpieces! Perfect for the special day! Excessive bouquets were also popular in the 30’s. (Florists must have had a great time creating gorgeous masterpieces!)

After the bleak war years, the 1950’s saw an explosion of large, elaborate affairs! Below is Elizabeth Taylor at her wedding to her first husband, Nicky Hilton (Paris Hilton’s great grandfather!) (Is it us or does that cake look rather precarious?!)

Moving into the 60’s – trimmed wedding dresses were oh so en vogue. Just look at Cilla’s feathers, bet they kept her nice and warm!

Here’s the 1960’s top ten wedding songs, our favourite is number 5, what’s yours?

The 1970’s screamed Rock and Roll! And what’s more famous than Mick Jagger marrying his brunette beauty – Bianca Pérez-Mora Macias (you even get to hear Mick speaking french, twit twoo!) Bianca effortlessly (although we’re sure a lot of effort has gone in) looks stunning in her Yves saint Laurent jacket and skirt which cleverly covered her 4 month baby bump! Her veiled wide brimmed hat, also by the designer, looks simple but perfectly glam!
