Vintage isn’t always pre 1989 – on today’s blog Gina delves into the vintage inspired look and talks all things Orla Kiely! Take it away Gina…
If my bank balance was a little healthier, I assure you, my wardrobe would house Orla Kiely’s S/S14 collection TWICE. It’s stunning. With vintage loving fans such as Gizzi Erksine, we’re more than happy to drool over this collection and wish we owned it ALL. On top of that, her 2014 Resort Collection is even cuter with polka dots, flared skirts and secretary style layering. I don’t know which I prefer!
With her S/S14 collection taking influence from the safari, we have shirt dresses with pocket detail, browns and sandy coloured fabrics. Lions, zebras and giraffes make the odd appearance too! But ultimately it’s the clean, simple but obviously vintage inspired shapes and patterns we adore that make these collections so desirable. If you have 2 mins, you must watch this adorable promo video for the S/S14 collection here!
The Resort pieces are less “themed” but provide wardrobe staples in fluffy pastel colours! Honestly, what could not be loved?!
Oh and did I mention these shoes? Designed for her collaboration with Clarks, these are the yellow and white buckle platforms that appear throughout the safari look book. At £120 a pop and not immediately my cup of tea, after seeing them with every safari outfit in this shoot I can see them going perfectly with every dress I own. The power of good styling and a good look book – vintage sellers take note!
One thing we love about Orla Kiely is the styling. Long crisp white shirts underneath shift dresses and tank tops give a put together look that suggests hours of planning. There‘s just enough room for a statement necklace to pop under your collar too! Plus the model’s hair and make up is left simple, letting the clothes do the talking and despite an obvious nod to the past, the modern styling creates a sense of moving forward. Confirming that we can all wear vintage.
At all our vintage fairs there will be some elements of vintage inspired … perhaps not Orla Kiely, but our traders are just as creative and stylish! Pop here for all our upcoming vintage fairs and festivals!
We’ll be back soon with more pre-loved inspiration and humbling stories! Alex and Sam x
(and of course Gina)
